Welcome Back Nando

What a strange few days. Stevie G’s fabulous hat-trick at Napoli in the EL and then this good old smack upside of Chelski’s head yesterday. The Reds are back! El Niño is back. Let’s hope it continues for a bit.

It began with a slow, uninspiring win over Bolton, then it looked like Napoli would get the better of the LFC lads in the Europa League clash when Gerrard came on the field and put in a classic Stevie G performance to lead his side to a win that put more hope back into our hearts. Still, we had some doubt and questions regarding the squad’s form going into this weekend’s clash with Chelsea. Perhaps the biggest ones surrounding Fernando Torres.

We’re happy he responded well, the two goals he scored is exactly what we’ve been waiting for from him. We’re overjoyed at the quality of ’nando’s finishes and runs, as with Kuyt’s touch, Stevie’s passing game and ability to raise the overall team level. We’re extatic to see Reina’s lightning reflexes and sweet positioning on the line. It’s not enough though, not yet, there’s still a lack of defensive power on the midfield—no-one’s come close to replacing the void left by Xabi Alonso yet—and there is a definite need for more offensive quality to back up Torres up front as well as Gerrard and Maxi. It’s not enough to have to rely on a few key players to get the results we’re hoping for. But this 2–0 victory against Chelsea, and the way it was won, is a good step on the way.

Plus, beating Chelski is always immensely rewarding in itself.
